Identifying donors that can get behind your mission long term, MAJOR donors, is key for development success. Determining at what level a donor registers as a major donor for your organization is an important first step. From here, you can truly make your development team aware of who to hone in on as potential partners in bringing your mission and vision to life.
Do Some Digging
Do your due diligence as you select area companies, organizations, foundations, and individuals to invest in your cause. Understand the passions they have, and how those interests can align with your goals. Use these facts to establish rapport as you set your first meetings.
Establish a History
Track your stage history in your organization wide CRM. What do I mean by stages? From first meeting, to facility tour, to major ask, to long time commitment, catch a glimpse into what works in attracting major support to your nonprofit.
After researching and meeting, it’s time to make the ask. Education and transparency are your biggest advocates as you prep these donors for your ask. Make sure they understand how their gifts will be used, and as their gifts are being used, they’re included in that progress as well.
From the initial ask, your primary responsibility is to care for this budding relationship with a new donor. You can show you care by regular communication, encouraging attendance to events, and welcoming to get involved in different ways as you seek to fulfill your vision with their help.
